Before you start #

The Windows installer isn't public yet. This guide shows how it works, so you're ready when it is. See Passyble for Windows for the status.

You need Windows 10 or 11. Passyble installs just for you, so it needs no admin rights, and it updates itself later.

Open Passyble and pick a start #

Passyble opens with Welcome to Passyble. Pick one:

  • Use on this PC: a new vault. Most people start here.
  • Sign in to Passyble Server: if someone sent you an invite link or a server address.
  • Restore from Google Drive or Open an existing vault file: if you already use Passyble on another device.

Create your vault #

  1. Choose Use on this PC.
  2. Give the vault a name. It's shown in your vault list, and you can rename it later.
  3. Leave it on this PC, or open More options and choose a location in a OneDrive or Dropbox folder if you want the vault on your other PCs too.

Choose a good master password #

It's the one password you have to remember. Use a sentence of four or more random words, for example orange piano river seven, rather than a short complicated word. Long beats complicated. The strength meter tells you when it's good enough.

Type it a second time under Repeat master password, then click Create vault.

Nobody can reset your master password for you, not even Sensyble. That's why the next step matters.

Save a recovery code #

Right after the vault is created, Passyble offers a recovery code. With it you can open the vault if you forget the master password.

  1. Click Print… or Save as a text file….
  2. Keep it somewhere safe away from the PC: a drawer, a USB stick, a safe.
  3. Tick I printed or saved my recovery code.

The code is shown only once. More in Recovery codes and a forgotten master password.

Follow the Get started checklist #

Above your items, Passyble shows a Get started checklist:

Short versions of these tutorials are always in Settings → Help and tutorials.

Where Passyble lives #

Passyble runs in the system tray, near the clock. It locks itself after 15 minutes without use, when you press Win+L and when the PC sleeps. Press Ctrl+L to lock right away.

Tip: turn on Settings → Startup → Start with Windows, so the browser extension and the hotkey work right after you sign in to Windows.
